Maybe the Quiet Was the Mercy…
Our internet has been out for a couple of days.
Normally, that would just be an inconvenience. But where we live, our cell service is so poor that when the internet goes out, pretty much everything goes with it.
No TV. No scrolling. No games. Half the time, even sending a text means standing by a window trying to catch enough signal.
And yes… I have complained. 😂
We rely on the internet for so much that suddenly not having it felt like somebody had flipped the OFF switch on our normal life.
But somewhere in all that frustration, something unexpected happened.
We got quiet.
We sat on the porch.
We rode around the neighborhood just because we could.
We sat out back and watched the deer.
My husband and I talked — really talked — without the television playing in the background or one of us looking down at a phone.
And somewhere along the way I realized…
The quiet was nice.
Maybe even needed.
Maybe we don’t need more time. Maybe we need less noise.
How many times have I said, “I just don’t have enough time”?
Not enough time to sit with God.
Not enough time to really study His Word.
Not enough time to pray without rushing through it.
Not enough time to simply be still.
Yet somehow there is time to scroll.
Time for television.
Time for games.
Time for all kinds of mindless things that fill our attention without filling our hearts.
And please know, I am not pointing a finger at anybody.
I’m talking to myself, too.
Because maybe the problem isn’t that God hasn’t given us enough time.
Maybe we’ve simply become so accustomed to noise that we’ve forgotten what to do with quiet.
Psalm 46:10 says:
“Be still, and know that I am God.”
Be still.
There’s something about those two little words that hits differently when the television won’t turn on, the phone won’t load, and the world suddenly gets a whole lot quieter.
Sometimes the things we depend on can become the things that distract us.
And sometimes God can use even an inconvenience to remind us where our dependence truly belongs.
These last couple of days weren’t what I would have chosen.
But there have been porch conversations.
There have been slow rides through the neighborhood.
There have been deer to watch.
There has been laughter with my husband.
There has been quiet.
And there has been time to notice God in the middle of ordinary moments again.
So maybe I don’t need the internet company to hurry quite as much as I thought I did. 😂
Okay… maybe they can still hurry a little.
But I hope I don’t forget what these quiet days reminded me:
Less scrolling. More Jesus.
Less noise. More listening.
Less rushing. More noticing.
Sometimes what looks like an inconvenience can become an unexpected mercy.
And tonight, sitting near the window trying to get enough signal to share this…
I’m thankful for the quiet. 🤍
